You don't need a long-haul flight for winter sunshine. Several destinations within roughly four hours of most UK airports offer warm days, cheap flights and good-value stays from November to March. Here's an honest comparison of temperature, price and the type of trip each one suits.

- Agadir, Morocco: often around 20°C, with sunny days. Roughly three and a half to four hours.
- Marrakech, Morocco: around 18–20°C by day, but cold nights. Roughly three and a half to four hours.

These are typical figures. Weather varies year to year, so check forecasts closer to the time.
Warmest: the Canary Islands
For beach-and-pool warmth in January, the Canaries are hard to beat, and flights come from almost every UK airport. Prices peak at Christmas and in half-terms, so aim for mid-January, early March or late November. Read the cheapest month for Tenerife, Cardiff to Tenerife and Glasgow to Lanzarote.
Best value culture and sun: Morocco
Agadir offers a long beach and mild winters at prices often below the Canaries. Marrakech is perfect for culture with sunshine, though you'll want a warm jumper at night. See Agadir, Marrakech on a budget and Manchester to Marrakech.
✦ Search live fares: “Agadir or Tenerife in January from Bristol”Shortest flight: southern Spain and the Algarve
At around two and a half hours, Malaga and Faro are the quickest winter sun trips. It's not beach-hot, but it's pleasant for walking, golf and city sightseeing, with very cheap flights out of season. See Bristol to Malaga and the budget Algarve guide.
English-speaking and easy: Malta
Malta is mild rather than hot in winter, but it's perfect for sightseeing, has UK plugs and English everywhere, and lots of flights. See Gatwick to Malta.
Budget all-inclusive: Tunisia
Tunisia is cooler in deep winter, but excellent value. Djerba in the south is the warmest. It's great in late October, November and from March. See Tunisia cheap holidays and Tunis city break.
Want proper heat? Go a bit further
For guaranteed mid-20s °C and warm seas in winter, you'll need five hours or more: Egypt's Red Sea (Hurghada, Sharm) or the Gulf (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha).
How to pay less for winter sun
- Avoid Christmas, New Year and half-terms. They have the biggest effect on price.
- Compare two or three UK airports.
- Try unusual trip lengths (four, five, ten or eleven nights).
- Go hand luggage only for short trips.
- Weigh up all-inclusive against DIY (see our comparison).

What does a budget trip look like?
To choose, start with what matters most. If it's beach warmth, pick the Canaries. If it's culture with sunshine, pick Marrakech or Malaga. If it's the shortest flight, pick Malaga or Faro. If it's the cheapest all-inclusive, pick Tunisia or Agadir. If it's the easiest trip, pick Malta. Then search two or three of those for your dates. Our AI search lets you type something like "winter sun in February from Manchester under four hours" and compare live fares in one go.
Before you book: a quick checklist for winter sun
- Compare dates: check a whole month of fares, not just one date. A few days' difference can change the price a lot (see our flexible date tips).
- Count the extras: add bags, seats and airport transfers to the fare before comparing options.
- Check entry rules: read the latest FCDO advice for your destination on GOV.UK, including passport validity.
- Sort insurance early: buy travel insurance when you book, so cancellation cover starts straight away.
- Plan data and money: sort a travel eSIM and a fee-free card before you leave (see our eSIM and money guides).
- Read the partner's terms: the booking site handles your booking and payment, so check its price, baggage and cancellation terms before you pay.
