Abu Dhabi on a budget: winter sun guide from the UK
Last updated 29 October 2026 · by the HopCheap team
Abu Dhabi is the UAE's capital: calmer than Dubai, with fine beaches, the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (free to visit) and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Hotels can be cheaper than in Dubai for similar quality, and flights from the UK take around seven hours.
Flights from the UK
Etihad has flown to Abu Dhabi (AUH) from London Heathrow and Manchester, and other airlines (including British Airways) have also served the route. Compare with Dubai too: the two cities are around 1.5 hours apart by road, and a cheaper Dubai flight plus a bus can sometimes beat a direct Abu Dhabi fare.

- November–March: warm, sunny and ideal for the beach. Peak season.
- Value weeks: early November, mid-January and early March, outside school holidays and major events (such as the Formula 1 weekend, usually late in the year, when hotel prices jump).
- Summer: extremely hot and humid, but with big hotel discounts.
What are the entry rules for UK citizens?
British citizens currently receive a free visit visa on arrival in the UAE. Your passport needs six months' validity. Check rules on medicines and local laws in the FCDO UAE advice.
Where to stay
- Downtown/Corniche: city hotels with beach access along the Corniche. Often the best value.
- Al Maryah and Al Reem islands: modern, central and mid-range.
- Saadiyat and Yas islands: resorts, theme parks and the Louvre. Pricier.
Free and cheap sights
- Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: one of the world's most beautiful mosques, and free to visit. Book a slot online, and follow the dress code (abayas may be provided for women).
- Corniche beach: public beach sections, some with a small fee, plus a long promenade.
- Qasr Al Watan: the presidential palace. Paid, with a light show in the evening.
- Heritage Village and Qasr Al Hosn: modest fees, and a window into pre-oil Abu Dhabi.
- Mangrove National Park: kayak tours are good value compared with many desert activities.
- Louvre Abu Dhabi: worth paying for. The architecture alone is spectacular.
Getting around
Abu Dhabi has a public bus network with a Hafilat card, and taxis are metered and cheaper than in many cities. Distances are large, so plan to combine buses and taxis. Ride-hailing apps work too. Inter-city buses to Dubai are cheap.
Theme parks
Yas Island's theme parks (Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld) are expensive. Multi-park tickets bought online and in advance are usually much cheaper than gate prices. Some hotel packages include park access.
Eating for less
Lebanese, Indian, Pakistani and Emirati cafés offer cheap, filling meals. Shawarma stands are everywhere. Alcohol is sold in licensed venues and is expensive. Hotel brunches are great value if you want one big splurge.
Savings checklist
- Compare flights into Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
- Avoid F1 weekend and UK half-terms.
- Stay on the Corniche rather than the resort islands.
- Book theme park and attraction tickets online.
Abu Dhabi vs Dubai for a budget trip
Abu Dhabi is quieter, with fewer nightlife options, but its beaches are less crowded and the cultural sights are world-class. Dubai has more budget hotels and a better metro. A good-value plan for a week is to split the stay: three nights in Abu Dhabi for the mosque, the Louvre and the beaches, then a cheap inter-city bus to Dubai for the souks and the skyline.

What does a budget trip look like?
Day 1: Settle in on the Corniche, with a beach walk and dinner at a Lebanese café. Day 2: Visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the late afternoon, and stay for sunset when the marble glows. Day 3: Spend the morning at the Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat, then visit Saadiyat public beach. Day 4: Visit Qasr Al Watan and Qasr Al Hosn, then take a mangrove kayak at sunset. Day 5: Have a theme-park day on Yas Island if it fits your budget, or take the bus to Dubai for a day. Spacing out paid attractions stops costs creeping up.
Before you book: a quick checklist for Abu Dhabi
- Compare dates: check a whole month of fares, not just one date. A few days' difference can change the price a lot (see our flexible date tips).
- Count the extras: add bags, seats and airport transfers to the fare before comparing options.
- Check entry rules: read the latest FCDO advice for your destination on GOV.UK, including passport validity.
- Sort insurance early: buy travel insurance when you book, so cancellation cover starts straight away.
- Plan data and money: sort a travel eSIM and a fee-free card before you leave (see our eSIM and money guides).
- Read the partner's terms: the booking site handles your booking and payment, so check its price, baggage and cancellation terms before you pay.
