Doha on a budget: stopover and short break guide from the UK
Last updated 29 October 2026 · by the HopCheap team
Doha, the capital of Qatar, is often seen as just a place to change planes on the way to Asia or Australia. As a two- or three-night stopover or winter break, though, it's surprisingly good value. Its world-class museums are cheap or free, the metro is excellent, and winter weather is warm and sunny. Flights from the UK take around six and a half to seven hours.
Flights from the UK
Qatar Airways has flown to Doha (DOH) from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, and British Airways also serves Doha from Heathrow. Qatar Airways and Discover Qatar have offered stopover packages with discounted hotel nights for passengers flying on to another destination. Terms change, so check what's available when you book.
✦ Search live fares: “Cheap flights to Doha from the UK”When to go
- November–March: the best weather, typically in the mid-20s °C. Peak season.
- October and April: hot but manageable, and often cheaper.
- May–September: very hot and humid. Hotels drop prices, but outdoor sightseeing is hard.
- Ramadan: eating and drinking in public in daytime is restricted. Dates move each year.
Entry rules
British citizens have been able to get a visa waiver on arrival in Qatar for a set period, with a passport valid for at least six months. Rules can change, and certain medicines are controlled. Read the FCDO Qatar advice before travel.
Getting around cheaply
The Doha Metro (red line) runs from Hamad International Airport into the city, and the network reaches the Corniche, Msheireb, Souq Waqif and Lusail. Fares are low, and day passes are available. Ride-hailing apps are reasonably priced for places the metro doesn't reach.
Where to stay
- Msheireb and around Souq Waqif: central, walkable and close to the sights, with a range of prices.
- Al Sadd and Bin Mahmoud: often cheaper hotels, with metro access.
- West Bay and The Pearl: glamorous high-rises, but pricier.
Free and cheap things to do
- Souq Waqif: a restored traditional market of spices, perfumes, falcons and cafés. It's free to wander and best in the evening.
- The Corniche: a 7 km waterfront promenade with skyline views, especially at sunset.
- Museum of Islamic Art: a stunning building by I. M. Pei with an exceptional collection. Entry fees have been modest, and the surrounding MIA Park is free.
- National Museum of Qatar: the "desert rose" building by Jean Nouvel. Worth paying for.
- Katara Cultural Village: free to explore, with an amphitheatre, galleries and a beach area.
- Msheireb Downtown: modern architecture and heritage house museums.
Paid extras
Desert safaris to the Inland Sea (Khor Al Adaid) are the classic trip. Compare operators and choose ones with good safety reviews. Dhow cruises from the Corniche are an affordable hour on the water.
Eating cheaply
Doha's large South Asian and Arab communities mean lots of cheap, excellent food. Karak tea and paratha from roadside cafés, shawarma, Indian thalis and Yemeni mandi restaurants are great value. Alcohol is only available in licensed hotel venues and is expensive.
Culture
Qatar is conservative. Cover shoulders and knees in public places such as malls, souqs and museums. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
Savings checklist
- Look for stopover deals when flying on to Asia or Australia.
- Use the metro from the airport.
- Visit in November–March, outside UK school holidays.
- Eat in Souq Waqif's side streets and local cafés.

What does a budget trip look like?
Day 1: Take the metro to Msheireb. Walk to Souq Waqif for dinner and the evening atmosphere. Day 2: Visit the Museum of Islamic Art in the morning, have a picnic in MIA Park, and visit the National Museum of Qatar in the afternoon. Walk the Corniche at sunset. Day 3: Explore Katara Cultural Village and The Pearl, or join a desert trip to the Inland Sea. On a two-night stopover, prioritise the two museums and Souq Waqif. They're the best value for the time.
Before you book: a quick checklist for Doha
- Compare dates: check a whole month of fares, not just one date. A few days' difference can change the price a lot (see our flexible date tips).
- Count the extras: add bags, seats and airport transfers to the fare before comparing options.
- Check entry rules: read the latest FCDO advice for your destination on GOV.UK, including passport validity.
- Sort insurance early: buy travel insurance when you book, so cancellation cover starts straight away.
- Plan data and money: sort a travel eSIM and a fee-free card before you leave (see our eSIM and money guides).
- Read the partner's terms: the booking site handles your booking and payment, so check its price, baggage and cancellation terms before you pay.
