Cheap flights from Cardiff to Tenerife: winter sun from Wales
Last updated 29 October 2026 · by the HopCheap team
Tenerife is the go-to winter sun destination for many Welsh travellers. It's warm in January, around four and a quarter hours from Cardiff, and has everything from cheap apartments to big all-inclusive resorts. Cardiff Airport has had Tenerife flights with leisure and low-cost airlines, and Bristol is close enough to compare. Here's how to get the best deal.
Flights from Cardiff
Cardiff's Tenerife flights have typically been operated by leisure airlines and tour operators (such as TUI) plus low-cost carriers, with schedules that change by season. Most land at Tenerife South (TFS), which is close to the main resorts. Because Cardiff has fewer flights than larger airports, fares can be higher on popular weeks, so always compare with Bristol (see Cardiff vs Bristol). If Bristol is cheaper, remember to add fuel and parking before deciding.
✦ Search live fares: “Cheap flights from Cardiff to Tenerife”When is Tenerife cheapest?
Tenerife's peak season is the UK winter, so the cheapest months are not always the ones you'd expect. Broadly:
- Usually cheaper: May, June and late September to October outside half-term, when the weather is still warm and sunny.
- Good-value winter weeks: early December, mid-January and early March outside school holidays.
- Usually most expensive: Christmas, New Year, February half-term and Easter.
We break this down month by month in the cheapest month to fly to Tenerife.
South vs north Tenerife
- South (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje): the sunniest and driest part of the island, with lots of hotels and the biggest choice of budget apartments. It's close to Tenerife South airport.
- North (Puerto de la Cruz): greener, more traditional and often cheaper for hotels. It can be cloudier, though. Tenerife North airport (TFN) mainly handles inter-island and Spanish flights.
Most UK budget travellers base themselves in the south. Los Cristianos is a good mix of beach, harbour and local character, and has the ferry to La Gomera.
✦ Search live fares: “Tenerife in January for 2 from Cardiff”All-inclusive or self-catering?
Tenerife has some of the most competitive all-inclusive prices in Spain, but self-catering is also easy thanks to big supermarkets. If you drink a lot and like the pool, all-inclusive can work out cheaper. If you want to explore Mount Teide, whale-watching trips and different restaurants, DIY often wins. See our all-inclusive vs DIY guide.
Getting around for less
TITSA buses cover the island and connect the airport to the southern resorts. A rechargeable bus card (or the ten+ travel card) cuts fares. If you want to drive up Teide, hiring a car for a day or two is often cheaper than taking organised tours, but book the cable car in advance if you plan to ride it.
Free and cheap things to do
- Drive or bus to Teide National Park. Entry to the park is free, though the cable car costs extra.
- Walk the coastal path from Los Cristianos to Costa Adeje.
- Visit Masca village (check walking trail permits, as access rules have changed in recent years).
- Explore La Laguna, a World Heritage old town near Santa Cruz.
Entry rules
The Canary Islands are part of Spain and the Schengen area, so the 90/180-day rule and EU border checks apply. See our entry rules guide and the FCDO Spain advice.
Savings checklist
- Compare Cardiff and Bristol for the same dates.
- Avoid half-term if you can. It has the biggest effect on price.
- Look at 10–11 night trips. They're sometimes cheaper per night than a week.
- Book a hold bag at booking rather than at the airport.

What does a budget trip look like?
Days 1–2: Settle into Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje. Do a supermarket shop, then relax at the beach or pool. Walk the coastal promenade at sunset. Day 3: Hire a car for a day and drive up to Teide National Park early, before the clouds and crowds. Stop at the viewpoints on the way down through Vilaflor. Day 4: Take the ferry to La Gomera for a day of hiking and quiet villages, or join a whale-watching trip from Los Cristianos. Choose an operator that follows responsible-watching rules. Day 5: Explore the old town of La Laguna and Santa Cruz by bus. Days 6–7: Enjoy beach time, then visit Los Gigantes for cliff views. Mixing two car-free beach days with one hire day keeps transport costs low.
Before you book: a quick checklist for Tenerife
- Compare dates: check a whole month of fares, not just one date. A few days' difference can change the price a lot (see our flexible date tips).
- Count the extras: add bags, seats and airport transfers to the fare before comparing options.
- Check entry rules: read the latest FCDO advice for your destination on GOV.UK, including passport validity.
- Sort insurance early: buy travel insurance when you book, so cancellation cover starts straight away.
- Plan data and money: sort a travel eSIM and a fee-free card before you leave (see our eSIM and money guides).
- Read the partner's terms: the booking site handles your booking and payment, so check its price, baggage and cancellation terms before you pay.
